You've probably heard something about augmented reality (AR).

It is true that AR, as well as virtual reality, began to be used in the entertainment and video game industry. However, now its uses have extended to other areas.

In short, AR is the set of technologies that allow you to visualize the real context combined with virtual graphic references that add relevant information in real time.

How does augmented reality come about?

AR arises from the development called Videoplace, created by Myron Krueger in 1974. This invention mixed the projection system and video cameras, which produced shadows.

In this way, an interactive environment was generated, an alternate reality that surrounded the users and responded to their movements and actions.

But it wasn't until 1992 that the first functional immersive AR system was used. This system showed robotic arms on the user's arms, and in this way an augmented vision of reality was created.

Created by Louis Rosenberg at an air base in Brooks (Texas, USA), it was named Virtual Fixtures.

Although in the following years the development of augmented reality focused on the entertainment and video game sector, as previously mentioned, currently these technologies have begun to be used in other industries, such as manufacturing, for utilitarian purposes.

Augmented reality in manufacturing 

One of the sectors where AR has begun to stand out is manufacturing. And it has been seen how this type of technology can enrich the industry and its processes.

As it does? For example, by overlaying information of interest with images, 3D objects, videos, etc.

In this way, augmented reality in manufacturing provides maintenance managers with the opportunity to improve processes and production in the operational area, since it allows them to optimize:

Augmented reality contributes a lot to this area, since inexperienced staff can follow in the footsteps of already experienced workers, without having to interfere with work because they can follow their movements remotely.

AR is also capable of providing updates and data required to help training workers understand what happens in certain situations, why, and how it relates to their daily tasks.

Expert Remote Support

The possibilities that technology gives to the manufacturing industry are many, since it is possible that an expert, remotely and through digital and augmented reality systems, can contact another through a video call to exchange images or combined reality notes to help to solve problems.

Applications of augmented reality in industry

Many organizations are already making use of augmented reality; For example, Volkswagen uses a system that guides its mechanics in processes such as assembly or maintenance of the brand's hybrid car. In addition, this system can indicate the type of tool that can be used, what parts to select, or offers the option to virtually try on components such as different colored hoods.

Another manufacturer uses this type of technology to guide its employees by emitting information in real time through smart glasses. It is also used to give instructions on maintenance tasks or reminders of safety measures.

Other manufacturers have realized that if workers don't use the AR tools available, time can be lost or production can fail.

For example, a worker who did not use his headset to learn how to best optimize the wiring he was installing for a wind turbine control panel and instead preferred to use the manual wasted an opportunity to improve by 34%. wiring performance.

Therefore, augmented reality applications within a company's production line generate many advantages and all contribute to improving processes and productivity.
